CHAPTER 13

Tara’s lawyer, Eugene Solomon, greeted her and ushered her into a waiting limousine early Monday morning. After the car pulled into traffic, leaving the New York airport behind, Eugene handed Tara the latest revised copy of her recording contract.

“They budged a little on the points, which I explained to you over the telephone last week,” the lawyer informed her. “However, you aren’t making it easy. Why haven’t you turned your project in?”

Tara did not immediately reply, as she was flipping through the contract. She wanted to see if anything stood out that she could ask him about before her meeting at Empire Records that morning. Finally, she turned to Eugene and simply said, “It’s not ready.”

“When you wrapped up the tour, you gave me the impression that it was. Empire is behind schedule now, and I’m finding it harder and harder to come up with excuses as to why they don’t have it. You know, you’re coming dangerously close to breach of contract.”

“Don’t worry, they already agreed to the changes,” Tara said, trying to ease the lawyer’s concerns. “I’ll handle Empire. We’re just tweaking a few things; I promise it will be ready soon.”

“Good,” he replied. “I have also fielded a few calls from management firms who want to represent you. I told them I would run it by you.”

“No, no and no,” she answered. “I like things the way they are. Sydney and I are doing a great job. Plus we have you and Pamela; we don’t need any more people in the mix. Please tell them all no.”

“Understood. Now what about this? You want me to help you revise your will?” When Tara nodded, he asked, “Anything I should know about?”

“I just want to make sure it’s the way it should be. And I have some minor changes to make.”

“As you wish,” the lawyer said, looking out the window and seeing the towering Manhattan building that was home to Empire Records. “We’re here. Let’s try to get this meeting over with as soon as possible.”

Hurrying students poured into the halls, nearly trampling Stephanie as she monitored classroom changes.

She heard an unbroken chorus of “Good morning, Dr. Mathers,” but when she heard one voice in particular, she turned and came face to face with Aaron.

“Hello, Aunt Steph, I’m sorry, I mean Dr. Mathers,” Aaron greeted her.

She placed an arm around his shoulders and pulled him close. “Hello, Aaron, welcome back.” Stephanie led him into her office and closed the door behind them. “So you were gone for a whole week. Tell me all about it. How was your trip?”

“It was real cool, Aunt Steph. We went everywhere and I got all this cool stuff.”

“How was it hanging out with your mother at an awards show? Must have been pretty exciting.”

Aaron’s face grew dim, causing Stephanie to wonder what she had said to trigger his emotional turnaround from joy to sadness.

Brows furrowed, Aaron asked, “What are you talking about, Aunt Steph? My mother is dead.”
